Idlewild Park
Located near Jamaica Bay in Queens, this park was a natural wetland that was a great opportunity for the public to access a natural resource. We were brought in to design in coordination with Adrian Smith Design and Great Ecology. We collaborated on Phase 1, which included a trail network and a few overlooks throughout the park in addition to ecological restoration and analysis. One of the goals we kept in mind as we planned the space was to create a setting that could educate the community, especially children, on the structure of wetlands and their importance to natural and urban systems. Our hope was that in creating positive experiences for the younger generation, they would learn that wetlands were not a detrimental feature, but how fascinating and useful they are.
